Frequently
Asked Questions
Tattoos from the Soul, Inc. - FAQ
Q. What should I look for when deciding on a tattoo or
piercing shop?
A. You should feel comfortable with all aspects of the
shop you choose. The facilities should be clean and well
lit. The staff should be friendly and knowledgeable about
all aspects of tattooing or piercing, and be willing to answer
any questions you may have concerning tattooing or piercing.
The shop should be able to demonstrate the sterilization
procedures they employ for their equipment, an autoclave
should be present, and employees should be able to produce
a signed and dated logbook of sterilization activity.
Q. Is the tattooing procedure painful?
A. This is a tough question to answer, because pain is
a very subjective sensation. There can be various levels
of discomfort or pain involved in the tattooing process.
The location of the tattoo (proximity to bones, sensitive
skin areas, etc.) is one of the factors, but discomfort should
not determine where a tattoo is ultimately located. Most
people describe the sensation as a light stinging feeling,
while others describe a hot or vibrating sensation.
Q. How do I choose a Tattoo Artist?
A. Choosing the right artist to execute your design ideas
should involve a certain amount of investigation on your
part. Because they are artists, most tattooists have developed
an individual style to their art. Look at the artist's portfolio
to see if you like their style and technique. Ask questions.
Be patient when choosing the artist for your tattoo, it's
going to be on you for the rest of your life.
Q. How do I care for my tattoo after it's on?
A. Generally, tattoos heal in about 2-3 weeks after the
procedure, during this time, the tattoo should be kept clean,
dry, and out of direct sunlight. Many artists recommend the
light use of moisturizing lotion on the tattooed area during
the healing process. Individual artists may also recommend
the use of a topical antibiotic ointment during the first
few days of healing. Keeping the new tattoo out of water
and sunlight reduces the healing time of the tattoo, and
helps to preserve the integrity of the tattoo.
Q. Will my tattoo need a touch-up?
A. Because the tattoo is applied to skin, which tends to
differ from individual to individual, the need for retouching
tattoos varies. Factors such as exposure to sun, individual
skin type, cuts and scrapes, and the general care given to
the tattoo are all considerations.
Q. How do I choose the right design for my tattoo?
A. Tattoo designs are as random and varied as the people
who get them. While many people are happy picking a design
off the wall of a tattoo shop, others wish to have an artist
draw an original design for them. Your tattoo design will
be determined by your individual taste and style. Find the
right artist, explain what you would like to do, and be certain
and satisfied with your design before the actual tattoo is
applied.
